Adrianne Byrd, Comfort of a Man Arabesque, 2003 I m not a big reader of romances In fact, this will be only my fourth romance review since I started documenting such things in 1999 Adrianne Byrd is a regular on a forum I used to frequent, so when she announced the publication of this one, I figured I should check it out But feel free to take all that follows with a grain of salt for all I know, this is identical to other romances in the same vein All I know is, it ain t like any romance Adrianne Byrd, Comfort of a Man Arabesque, 2003 I m not a big reader of romances In fact, this will be only my fourth romance review since I started documenting such things in 1999 Adrianne Byrd is a regular on a forum I used to frequent, so when she announced the publication of this one, I figured I should check it out But feel free to take all that follows with a grain of salt for all I know, this is identical to other romances in the same vein All I know is, it ain t like any romance I ve read before Or much of anything else I ve read before, for that matter.Comfort of a Man, despite being burdened with something of a cumbersome title, is one heck of a good ride It s smart, funny, incisive, well paced Oh, yeah, and sexy Sexy as all get out The story revolves around Brooklyn Douglas, a real estate broker from Atlanta, and Isaiah Washington, a sales and marketing rep from Austin They meet during a trip to New York Isaiah s for business, Brooklyn s for pleasure and, through the various machinations of Brooklyn s friends and an optimistic bartender, end up having a one night stand The process of getting from meeting to bed could have been lifted from a Bunuel film Byrd knows how to keep the tension high by throwing in all sorts of ludicrous, but realistic, delays Due to imagine big roll of thunder here a series of coincidences, the two find themselves thrown together again the next summer, and from there, well, you know the drill If it doesn t have a lot of getting together, pushing away, and ultimately a happy ending, it ain t a romance, is it Where Byrd differs from the Steels, Cartlands, Blakes, et al Of the world is in two very important places her characters and her realism The characters to be found in Comfort of a Man are not your usual cardboard cutouts, but real, multidimensional characters that a reader can identify with, instead of the paper constructs one has to stretch to even empathize with Also, while the coincidences require suspension of disbelief oh, my, do they ever , the situations Brooklyn and Isaiah find themselves in once the coincidences are past are realistic Uncomfortably so, at times, for someone who s been there, done that, and bought the ripped shirt. The book s flaws are few, and the majority of them can probably be attributed to an editorial staff who weren t quite diligent enough A few cliches here and there, some typos and grammatical flaws Nothing, though, that really stops the book s flow A few of the minor characters border on the cardboard especially Brooklyn s son, Jaleel , but they only get a few pages of screen time In horror novels, they d be the folks walking around with KILL ME signs I really never thought I would so unapologetically recommend a romance novel But there it is

Comfort of a ManThis was a well written story, about Brooklyn and Isaiah who met at a hotel in NY at the bar, after hours of conversation over drinks they went to the room and had sex Months later they reconnected in Atlanta when he went to visit his sick mom and began a courtship Brooklyn has a seventeen year old son a ex husband the ex s girl friend who was her best friend and other interesting characters that make this a very very good read

Comfort of a Man is a re release by Adrianne Byrd originally published in 2003 Brooklyn Douglas is a recently divorced mother of a teenage son, who is attempting to put her live back together when she and her girlfriends decided to take a trip to the Big Apple for some rest and relaxation Brooklyn is taking a break from dealing with the opposite sex, much to the dislike of her friends Brooklyn on the other hand is recovering from some pretty traumatic emotionally battle scars because of the w Comfort of a Man is a re release by Adrianne Byrd originally published in 2003 Brooklyn Douglas is a recently divorced mother of a teenage son, who is attempting to put her live back together when she and her girlfriends decided to take a trip to the Big Apple for some rest and relaxation Brooklyn is taking a break from dealing with the opposite sex, much to the dislike of her friends Brooklyn on the other hand is recovering from some pretty traumatic emotionally battle scars because of the way her ex husband left enter ex best friend, stage right , but there s nothing like a little peer pressure, to make you take the leap of faith you didn t know you needed, right Enter, Isaiah Washington, work a holic extraordinaire From the moment he set eyes on Brooklyn he knew she had taking over the top spot in his to be had list Dusting off his cheesy one liners, he makes a play for Brooklyn that leads them to one incredible night in NYC Then she disappears Brooklyn is not ready for the feelings Isaiah stirs, so she cuts and runs Without her last name, Isaiah can t even begin to find her Fate had other plans Several months after their first encounter, an Atlanta highway brings them back together BAM While Brooklyn is dealing with a surly teenager are teenagers ever NOT surly , Isaiah is dealing with his own personal issues that may work to keep these two apart Ah, but again, fate is having none of that These two were meant to be and no matter how much they fought the feelings or what situations life threw at them and trust me, they were in a batting cage , love prevailed sigh.Although I enjoyed Comfort of a Man, I would have liked to have seen some interaction between Isaiah and Brooklyn s son When blending a family, that is a pretty strong dynamic The story lacked any scenes between the two I also would have liked to learn the reason why Brooklyn s ex best friend did what she did I sort of missed the development of that part of the story. All in all, if you haven t read this one, Comfort of a Man is worth the read, despite the two missing dynamics of the story I m going to give it 3.5 out of 5 pencils Nice job, Ms Byrd

Very good I highly recommend it She wants a little comfortHe wants a lotThis was a little twist on the theme of reluctant hero which I found stimulating she s getting over a bad divorce which was done believably and a teenage son who is doing that sullen adolescent thing While on an annual girl s weekend in NYC, they dare her to have a one night stand saying she s turning into a bitter prude. She doesn t intend to until she runs into a sexy stranger whose easy to talk to Their Very good I highly recommend it She wants a little comfortHe wants a lotThis was a little twist on the theme of reluctant hero which I found stimulating she s getting over a bad divorce which was done believably and a teenage son who is doing that sullen adolescent thing While on an annual girl s weekend in NYC, they dare her to have a one night stand saying she s turning into a bitter prude. She doesn t intend to until she runs into a sexy stranger whose easy to talk to Their one night stand is awesome The morning after she s the one to slip away and he is left hurt and bewildered.Later he comes to Atlanta where she lives to be with his sick mother They run into each other Okay that was a little formulaic, the happy coincident But it was worked in smoothly and with a little humor The story continues with him realizing he s falling in love and trying to get her to do so at least to admit to deeper feelings for him she won t even admit it to herself the resolution was handled skillfully by the author I was totally riveted Couldn t put it down The writing and editing were up to Harlequin s solid standards Ms Byrd is a winner
