Talk about heavy topics If you ever thought involvement in the Middle East as well as Africa was complicated even touching the lands of Japan from looking at the United States then this book reminds you all over again Taking over four months to digest process reread and take in the implications of how deep the United States has become in the politics culture and imperialistic nature of the regions of Afghanistan Israel India Pakistan Russia Iran Lebanon Ira Saudi Arabia Egypt and much much this is not for the light heartedShocking was the ties that were used with ex Nazi operators after World War II used by American ties to spy the topics and information just weigh on you as a reader seeing how deeply involved and how easy it is to judge the wrongdoing and tactics used to try and get into another country You see easily how ex criminals from the Nazi era made their way to Latin American and South American Countries; ties that were offered to them for their participation in spying later in Israel and Lebanon In 2018 we have the benefit of looking back and wishing things would have been rewritten so differently and the realization of animosity thrown on the United States also comes to light when individuals make the decision to mettle into another country sometimes with good intentions other times not but I have to say to underatke such a complicated past and history Andre Gerolymatos had anb unbdertaking larger than I could imagaine was possible from one indvidual The references provided are a book itself with over two pages of acronyms and definitions of the groups working out of so many Middle East countries let alone pages and pages of notes from the in text references to the dramatic personae provided to a timeline chronology of Middle East developments to the index to the Bibliography to say this was an extensive snapshot and just breaking the surface is mind boggling but a major understatementI walk away from this book conflicted for sure of how decisisions made cause dominoe effects of tragedy and little success later I think this is a must read but you need to prepare youself for an extensive and deep dive of time to truly absorb the conseuences and implications from this extensive text

This is a book that needed to be written This is a very divisive issue with founded fears and skepticism on both sides What I have noticed however is that some want to exclude certain facts from the conversation Agree or disagree with larger points and arguments but a fact is a fact Weand by that I mean the West have a history of interferingmeddlingactinginterveningwhatever verb makes you comfortable in the Middle East Whether it has involved directly installing leaders and dictators or aiding one side the other or both in conflicts we have inserted ourselves into the goings on and that does shape the broader view of us in the eyes of the populations involved It isn't blaming America to say that our covert activities and aiding puppet regimes friendly to us but brutual to the governed people would engender hatred and blowback making recruitment easier for our enemies It's a fact that has to be entered into the euation So by all means we can have discussion and debate but all facts have to be on the table That being said this book does an excellent job of laying out documentary proof of what I've stated above Where it goes awry is in its meandering and dry style It comes across as a series of essays or newspaper articles that share a theme but don't have the benefit of an editor that gives them cohesion The chronology jumps around a bit and the writing is a bit emotionless almost like reading a police report Overall well worth the read but it could have benefited from an active editor

While informative the author's construction of the book is atrocious Instead of chronologically approaching the subject he goes back in forth between regions In doing so the author also wastes a lot of time rehashing information while at the same time seems to be skipping over information I was expecting a lot and was greatly disappointed
