    Exceptional and moving story I really loved this story of mining families in the early 20th century England Both sides, the workers and the owners, are brought to life in the excellent writing by Janet MacLeod Trotter The ability to make you feel the emotions of the poor money s families with their dignity and caring for one another is potent The struggles of the striking miners and their efforts to sustain their already meager lives while maintaining solidarity is felt here You get a very g Exceptional and moving story I really loved this story of mining families in the early 20th century England Both sides, the workers and the owners, are brought to life in the excellent writing by Janet MacLeod Trotter The ability to make you feel the emotions of the poor money s families with their dignity and caring for one another is potent The struggles of the striking miners and their efforts to sustain their already meager lives while maintaining solidarity is felt here You get a very good education on the problems and unity in overwhelming odds where money talks and a pitman s life isn t worth much by owners and government standards Additionally, the sense of entitlement and lack of education during this era is described It s a raw and very poignant story and makes one see the historical value here with regard to fair wages hours and working conditions and the value of unions I would highly recommend to readers of historical fiction as a great book to feel the effects on the mining families here Since this is book one of a series I plan to read on to book two
