I used to think that I don t like reading books about or set during the time of the world wars, but I ve recently read a couple of books that would suggest that perhaps that s not entirely true I did like reading this book on my kindle Maybe I just don t like reading about front line action or military strategy I thought the storyline of this novel was quite interesting and somewhat unusual I don t think I d want to serve as a propaganda tool for the enemy, or pretend to be of an enemy s I used to think that I don t like reading books about or set during the time of the world wars, but I ve recently read a couple of books that would suggest that perhaps that s not entirely true I did like reading this book on my kindle Maybe I just don t like reading about front line action or military strategy I thought the storyline of this novel was quite interesting and somewhat unusual I don t think I d want to serve as a propaganda tool for the enemy, or pretend to be of an enemy s nationality, whether it was for love or not Whether it was for love or not brings me to what I found somewhat lacking in this book While the main character claims he did all that he did for love which I do believe is probably the case , I didn t really feel any emotion reading about it I didn t feel the love between the two lovebirds While the whole storyline ought to be heartbreaking, my heart wasn t hurting while reading it Yes, I thought it was terrible that he kept finding out she was dead, just after they had started to plan the rest of their lives together And yes, the ending was ideal and should have left me elated, as I m sure the characters were For reasons unbeknownst to me, however, I just didn t feel all these things, they were just understood in my head I guess I just didn t get to experience the novel, which is something I love about my favourite books If I could have felt it all in this book, I think it would have been better Perhaps it was just me, though. The other thing that bugged me a bit was the ending It just seemed to be too ideal and work out too well view spoiler Sure, one could argue that it was over 20 years in the making, and therefore is not the picture of working out too well, but once they found each other, it all just pieced together too quickly Despite not having seen each other for 20 years, there was no awkwardness or needing to become reacquainted with the people they d become in the meantime Despite being locked away in an asylum, she was released just like that and became perfectly healthy mentally Despite their daughter only just finding out the truth, she transitioned unbelievably smoothly and abandoned the family she grew up with I find it all too hard to believe hide spoiler
