Kerala, my home state, is a top tourist destination because of its lush greenery, sunlit beaches, cool mountains and heavenly backwaters What most people don t know is that it is also a culturally rich place This thin strip of land on the southernmost tip of India was cut off from the rest of the subcontinent until fairly recently in history by the magnificent Western Ghats at the same time, the long, unbroken stretch of coast attracted seafarers from Europe and the Levant Christianity tradi Kerala, my home state, is a top tourist destination because of its lush greenery, sunlit beaches, cool mountains and heavenly backwaters What most people don t know is that it is also a culturally rich place This thin strip of land on the southernmost tip of India was cut off from the rest of the subcontinent until fairly recently in history by the magnificent Western Ghats at the same time, the long, unbroken stretch of coast attracted seafarers from Europe and the Levant Christianity traditionally came to India much before Europe when St Thomas came to Kerala, according to legend Islam was brought in by peaceful Arab traders and not by marauding warrior tribes, as it happened in North India The result is that we have a state with age old traditions of Christianity, Islam and even Judaism and a Hinduism which bears only a passing resemblance to the way it exists in the rest of India.Raveendran, the renowned leftist author and filmmaker travelled over the length and breadth of Kerala and a produced a fascinating TV serial called Ente Keralam My Kerala , in the Asianet TV channel in the eighties I remember enjoying it, as it showed me facets of my home state which was relatively unknown This book is derived from the serial, and I had high hopes for a delicious read. However, it was a tad disappointing The travelogue lacks meat, and the personal touch is missing It is mostly a description various places, their cultural peculiarities, religious institutions and festivals and prominent and pedigreed families Although very informative, it reads rather like a text book, and was a chore to get through And I felt that the author s personal prejudices coloured his analysis in some places especially where he sees evidence of the Hindu subjugation of Jains and the takeover of their places of worship in many temples. This would be useful as a field guide if one was considering travelling across Kerala, though
