In Thailand It Is Night is a Thai spiced mix of the earthly and spiritual, a yearning to understand love, loss, and our relationship to the physical world Every poem is filled with surprising language and a compelling voice that draws us into its searching and questioning A beautiful journey, and well worth the read

There are so many great things to say about Ira Sukrungruang s In Thailand It Is Night, starting with the fact that its content was engaging and beautiful, mixing elements of spirituality with relationships, and this journey to create a voice With all of that working well, what I actually loved most about this book as Sukrungruang s ability to use surprising language and make me think about words and the way they sound together just a little bit differently Phrases like did not wing away , There are so many great things to say about Ira Sukrungruang s In Thailand It Is Night, starting with the fact that its content was engaging and beautiful, mixing elements of spirituality with relationships, and this journey to create a voice With all of that working well, what I actually loved most about this book as Sukrungruang s ability to use surprising language and make me think about words and the way they sound together just a little bit differently Phrases like did not wing away , the iridescent glow of the indigo bunting , whose engines roared like an apocalyptic storm There were a ton of these great phrases, as well as just some really awesomely bold lines, some of my favorite of which were in Third World Dogs Josh Capca asked if I ate dogs I told him no, but the rumor spread I really respect this author s ability to write in form, either through traditional means like in the sestinas and prose poems, or throughsubtle forms like by using repetition or through breaking the poem up into sections both of which we see throughout the entirety of the collection I was also really interested in the fact that Sukrungruang also writes nonfiction pieces, is the co editor of two anthologies, and teaches Being able to balance different genres and academics while still being able to pull off this level of intricacies in his poetry is something that I truly admire

When I saw Ira at AWP14 I told him that even though it seems like I m stalking him, I m really just his biggest fan Right Which is one of the reasons I nominated his essay from Issue 6 of Superstition Review for a Pushcart it s not our fault he didn t win, it s Bill Henderson s for being biased against online lit mags I love that Ira signed my copy of this book Superstition Review Forever And it s one of the reasons I love his writing he has such a modern ability to be cheerful in When I saw Ira at AWP14 I told him that even though it seems like I m stalking him, I m really just his biggest fan Right Which is one of the reasons I nominated his essay from Issue 6 of Superstition Review for a Pushcart it s not our fault he didn t win, it s Bill Henderson s for being biased against online lit mags I love that Ira signed my copy of this book Superstition Review Forever And it s one of the reasons I love his writing he has such a modern ability to be cheerful in the face of hardship which in this particular case equaled me monopolizing his time at the bookfair table And that is what these poems do they celebrate nature, ritual, language, and place moving forward in time while looking back, with reverence, on memory Some of my favorite moments The fall leaves under melike a wooden sled For the love of god, strikeme down with that swatter Eventually, the prince will forgethe is a prince Tell me about longing, how it wounds like an arrow When you rise, I fall, and vice versa Buddha left his family to become Buddha Atlas, my friend, the world is heavy Put it down time never moves backward but memory does

I love this book s humility by which I mean that it opens with An Attempt to Explain Reincarnation that shows an understanding that perspective is access as well as limitation If we were dogs, we might better know the beauty of the bunny s zig zag trail through the snowy yard, etc One must travel and be versatile and empty enough to know the depth between stars and sidewalk cracks The ordinary is a sublime encounter, this book reminds us.The poems, many of which appear in the likes of I love this book s humility by which I mean that it opens with An Attempt to Explain Reincarnation that shows an understanding that perspective is access as well as limitation If we were dogs, we might better know the beauty of the bunny s zig zag trail through the snowy yard, etc One must travel and be versatile and empty enough to know the depth between stars and sidewalk cracks The ordinary is a sublime encounter, this book reminds us.The poems, many of which appear in the likes of the Georgia Review, Ninth Letter, Blood Lotus, and Slant, are refreshing in their risky intimacy I devoured it in a sitting, rewinding to read lines again and again, like this one My palms are up I want you to read Resonant with my thoughts exactly Enjoy

It s National Poetry Month I had the opportunity to listen to Ira speak in person about a lot of things, especially language and I found him not only humorous but extremely knowledgable in his craft He s a voice to be heard, that s for sure, and it speaks volumes for his poetry It s all very autobiographical but in a way that dances around the topics until you have to come to your own conclusions Poetry that is open ended but speaks a story is my favorite It s speculative, but it isn t all a It s National Poetry Month I had the opportunity to listen to Ira speak in person about a lot of things, especially language and I found him not only humorous but extremely knowledgable in his craft He s a voice to be heard, that s for sure, and it speaks volumes for his poetry It s all very autobiographical but in a way that dances around the topics until you have to come to your own conclusions Poetry that is open ended but speaks a story is my favorite It s speculative, but it isn t all at the same time You know the story, you ve heard it before, but not in this way, not so honestly, not like this. This collection is beautiful and deserves reading and recognition I m excited to keep it on my shelf
