Huber's commentaries the realities of direct care work are insightful and timely The blend of researched material and memoir moves perfectly between personal experience and the cold hard facts of the underpaid under appreciated and perhaps most dangerously because this is critical work under trained workers providing direct care to persons with disabilities and the elderly When Huber writes about her own experience this is moving on a personal level But it's the researched portions which because they show us that her experience is far too common that should move us to action

This is the book I've been trying to find for a long time I worked in frontline residential work for several years in several different settings It wasn't the statistics that made this book special although Sonya obviously did her research well I had a professor in grad school who uoted these words and I've never bothered to look the uote up until now But I always remembered itStatistics are human beings with the tears wiped off Paul Brodeur Outrageous MisconductThis is why this book even though it was so short packed so much power We saw human beings on both sides of the helping profession We saw why the statistics are so important These are the stories that make us realize that there are real people behind the numbers Those people should be difficult to ignore than they are I wish this got publicity than it does

This is a great primer on the undervaluing of direct care work despite its endemic stress danger and burnout Most workers are women earning low wages often with poor training and almost universally in the context of lack of respect for the job as a category It's a fortuitous time for me to come across this because issues around direct care are relevant to my major project According to the author's research DC work will be the single largest job category in the US by 2020
