This is so far the best children's picture book I've read about Chinese culture First of all it's about Chinese dragons Chinese dragons are not something you would slay for they signify prosperity and good luck and everyone wants their blessings In this book you can not only learn about the origin and cultural connotation of Chinese dragons but also can gain a glimpse of other cultural symbols and Chinese hieroglyphics The watercolor illustrations are a pleasure to your eyes Knowledge and fun in one book why not give it a try?

Children enter the world of the Chinese dragon here very different from the European dragon tradition that many may already be aware of Jin Jin hatches from an egg and is not sure what type of creature he is As he meets different animals he finds he has much in common with them He has the scales of a fish the claws of an eagle the body of a snake In order to find out what he really is he journeys to see Old Turtle and Crane who should be able to help him On the way readers get a taste of Chinese lettering as well as Chinese culture Finally when he reaches his destination Jin Jin fully understands what being a dragon is all aboutLovingly written and illustrated by siblings this book is a glimpse into another culture where dragons are kind curious and enchanting Both the text of the novel and the illustrations are personal than most books something that contributes to its authenticity The book has the feel of a traditional picture book while still being modern and accessible Recommended for children to understand a different type of dragon and learn about another culture This is perfect to use for Chinese New Year but should not be limited to that Appropriate for younger elementary children ages 6 8

Sean is halfway through this second year of dual immersion Chinese English in elementary school Along with learning the language comes learning the culture and stories What he has learned has begun to shape how I look for books for him when I'm at the library One of the recent books I picked was Jin Jin the Dragon by Grace Chang and illustrated by Chong ChangWhat attracted me to Jin Jin the Dragon beyond the adorable baby dragon on the cover is the inclusion of Chinese characters throughout the book As Jin Jin is trying to learn what she is she also learns how to read Chinese Her lessons are included in the book as part of the storyThe book has the characters for mountain 山 field 田 fish 魚 fire 火 turtle 龟 person 人 among others Most of these are characters Sean has already learned so he was able to read the clues that pop up through out the bookJin Jin the Dragon we happened to read at the same time Sean was reading Dragon of the Red Dawn review coming which features the Japanese version of the rain dragon It was fun to compare and contrast the similar dragons He has also used what he learned in the book in school

That was precious I loved the illustrations' melding of a realistic style and fantastic elements I was unfamiliar with the legend this darling book is based on so it was lovely to have this popular story be new to me I love dragons especially beneficent ones and I did not know that was the place they took in Chinese mythology I will have to do some further reading into those traditions

A sweetly illustrated tale of a little dragon's journey of self discovery The writing is over long and the plot lacks structure But the basic story is interesting My sons and I enjoyed the inclusion of chinese characters in the back showing how they evolved over time from pictographs

  7. The Library Lady The Library Lady says:

Beautiful art But the story is trite and long it's divided into several parts and is like a chapter book than a picture book

Ah now that we've finished I get it Another book about the characters of Chinese writing Not great but useful if someone you know is interested in learning Chinese as a child
