1 This book has sparked anger and frustration that I've been fascinated by paganism for close to 15 years and yet I still don't have the tools necessary to practice thanks to the proliferation of books that promise easy spells and honor the God and Goddess of Wicca rather than books that offer skills you need to establish your own ritual practice2 Jane Meredith's writing is beautiful moving shows so much thoughtfulness and depth3 While the structure Meredith presents the Circle of Eight does not seem to appeal to me I have gotten so many good ideas of how to start my own practices from this book4 Again why are there not books about establishing your skills to practice5 I am so looking forward to building my own practices and reading of Meredith's books

I was intrigued by the magic system Jane Meredith proposes and I plan to use elements of it in my own practice as well as in an upcoming group ritual I did feel that she strayed from the meat of the workings of the Circle of Eight and went on a lot of tangents about different points in her life where she went and visited the local landmarks that they used to underpin their circle On the other hand she tied it together pretty well at the end and there were appendices with clear instructions for basics like opening and closing a ritual using her system I think the way this system works is up to the group or individual practicing It was definitely a breath of fresh air to hear something non Eurocentric about celebrating with the seasons the author is Australian

The Circle of Eight system can revive our own ancestral memories based on the sacredness of the land Especially thrilling is realizing how the ancient European practices of marking the Earth with great stone circles and the ley line tradition can live on today by incorporating the “lore of the land” into our ceremonies rituals magical practices and everyday lives Wherever we are located forming intimate relationships with the land feels familiar and Pagans Wiccans Animists Green Seers Druids Polytheists Goddess Devotees and Reconstructionists alike will resonate with the superb teachings guidelines advice and wisdom found in the Circle of Eight Creating Magic for Your Place on EarthOriginally reviewed by Pegi Eyers in WitchesPagans Issue 33

  4. David David says:

This book describes a system whereby up to eight people could develop their own magical system based on the land that they occupy rather than the traditional correspondences of magical texts based on European climate seasons and geography I loved it It approaches paganism from a placed based rather than a Eurocentric perspective It is anti colonial and anti hierarchical by nature

The imagery and descriptive sections of this book drew me in allowing me to pick it up every so often and not feel lost It’s different from similar books in that there’s not a lot of specific instruction which means you really have to develop your own rituals and I won’t feel like I’m comparing results

  6. Amanda Amanda says:

I really liked learning about ways to bring magic closer to me both literally and figuratively and would recommend this for anyone who would like to learn something that doesn’t seem to often be discussed in the witchcraft community that can make your experience with magic personal to you
