This was the only novel I could find based on Joanna I of Naples which still surprises me because she lived such an eventful life And extra bonus it was free because it was written in 1908 The writing was good especially given the time period it was written in sometimes older books have a style I don't love but unfortunately I just couldn't connect with any of the characters none of them seemed like likable protagonists It's a shame I'd love to see a well done dramatized account of Joanna's life

My knowledge of Hungarian and Italian medieval history is limited thus I approached this work of historical fiction with interest I was previously unfamiliar with all the personages and events depicted in this novel The author does a great job of making the people believable and painting pictures of their surroundings I’ve never been to Italy but I could envision the scenery well owing to the uality descriptionsThe narrative is fast paced mainly owing to it being heavy on dialogue making this a character driven text This is the type of story I favourBy the end I wanted to know “what happened next” prompting me to do a Google search for ueen Giovanna of Naples Although I realise Wikipedia isn’t to be wholly relied upon it’s likely to present accurate facts than “The Sword Decides” is considering it was published in 1908 I mention this because much of the events in the novel differ to what I read online some to great degrees Won’t say too much for fear of unleashing any spoilers but I would encourage anyone who’s taken pleasure from reading Ms Bowen’s contribution to check out recent info on the subject matterAfter reading up on Giovanna I also followed the link to her younger sister Maria of Naples as she was my favourite character in “The Sword Decides” Again the online details of Maria’s life differ to those in the novelAnyway no matter whether the novel is slightly out or way out on numerous facts this doesn’t alter my personal enjoyment of the story

I came across a lovely 1908 copy of this at the 2nd hand book shop in Highgate I'd read a collection of spooky stories by Marjorie Bowen before and really liked them but I'd not heard of this book A uick google search said that it was a historical gothic novel about the ueen of Naples which sounded like it could be uite good I throughly enjoyed it It was a little like Game of thrones if GOT had been written well with beautiful language and strong women charactersI wasn't familiar with the story at all and there were many unexpected twists and turns that I really enjoyed The characterisation was brilliant with only one exception the characters were all various shades of gray there was no hero everyone was doing things for their own interests and did some good and some terrible things which I really loved The ending was beautiful and spooky and dramatic I definitely want to read by Marjorie Bowen and have already started an ebook version of her black magic This was an excellent find

Marjorie Bowen was a really good writer the facts she has about King Andreas death in this Book are as near to fact as she could get it as the details of his death are confirmed by other sourcesI have always said that historical fact can be alarming than the best horror movie ever made as history is true and the horrors done in the name of ambition were terribleHaving said that this is a really good book well written and she has researched this book well to make it a really good read
