Shadowbound is set in basically the same time and locale setting as McMaster s London Steampunk series, but with a magical dark arts element I really liked this one, and I think it s going to be a great new series, with a couple of quibbles The wordbuilding was impressive and when Ianthe and Lucien were together, the story was great I was completely into their hunt for the relic, and their steamy times were explosive Both were mysterious characters, but Ianthe was a bitsecretive Shadowbound is set in basically the same time and locale setting as McMaster s London Steampunk series, but with a magical dark arts element I really liked this one, and I think it s going to be a great new series, with a couple of quibbles The wordbuilding was impressive and when Ianthe and Lucien were together, the story was great I was completely into their hunt for the relic, and their steamy times were explosive Both were mysterious characters, but Ianthe was a bitsecretive Some of the other parts of the book, not so much There were a number of characters introduced, and a were little hard to keep up with Also, some of the subplots took a bit away from the main story and a few of the scenes seemed to be designedto set up the next book s than telling the story in this one Small things, and didn t take away from my enjoyment of the book.Overall, a good book Looking forward to reading about the other two brothers I don t know if the series is just a trilogy for the brothers or ifis planned in this world Thank you to Melindeeloo for the loan

I m a big fan of Bec McMaster so I will read pretty much anything she writes The Dark Arts series is much like her London Steampunk one Although it follows different characters in a different world, there are some similarities like the setting and the complex worldbuilding You ll also see great characterization from McMaster, as I think she writes some of the best heroes and heroines out there.Speaking of the main couple, Ianthe and Rathbourne are a really good pair At first, I wondered I m a big fan of Bec McMaster so I will read pretty much anything she writes The Dark Arts series is much like her London Steampunk one Although it follows different characters in a different world, there are some similarities like the setting and the complex worldbuilding You ll also see great characterization from McMaster, as I think she writes some of the best heroes and heroines out there.Speaking of the main couple, Ianthe and Rathbourne are a really good pair At first, I wondered how they would get along because they seem to be polar opposites, but they do have a past that binds them together, which helps in moving things along I was a particular fan of Rathbourne He has quite a few great lines, some of which are very steamy He s definitely a hero that you need to watch out for.One of the standout things about this book is the worldbuilding It s set in London, but explores the magical andsinister areas It s certainly fascinating to read, but I did think it was a bit confusing in the beginning There s already quite a bit going on in the very beginning so I think that s where things could have been explained better But overall, I do really like the fact that the author made it complex It keeps things interesting. So if you like Paranormal Romance with a bit of Steampunk elements, then you definitely need to check Bec McMaster out

Once upon a long, long time ago before I had even heard of Bec McMaster and fallen in love Heart of Fire, I had gotten Soulbound cause the cover was so pretty and I happen to be a sucker for arranged forced marriage trope. But alas, as is the case with all books sitting on the TBR shelf, I forgot about it Oh, I saw the cover every so often on my reader but the timing was just never quite right for me to read it.Until.A couple weeks ago scrolling through my shelf I saw a book A very pretty book Once upon a long, long time ago before I had even heard of Bec McMaster and fallen in love Heart of Fire, I had gotten Soulbound cause the cover was so pretty and I happen to be a sucker for arranged forced marriage trope. But alas, as is the case with all books sitting on the TBR shelf, I forgot about it Oh, I saw the cover every so often on my reader but the timing was just never quite right for me to read it.Until.A couple weeks ago scrolling through my shelf I saw a book A very pretty book With a very pretty cover and a very pretty couple on the cover and by total happen stance I read the author s name andblanked out.It was my beloved McMaster and I had had no clue.So it was no surprise when I jumped at it.But oh dear reader, it was not all rainbows and sunshine and happily ever afters For Soulbound was thethirdbook in the trilogy and woe is me cause it wasn t even a stand alone in a series and now I was forced into reading two other books just so it would make sense Drama much As if reading a McMaster s is ever a chore. And that, is why I m reading this series that I didn t even know existed and boy am I glad cause once again Bec has done it I m of a mind to believe that Bec is either employing a demon or involved in some form of the dark arts cause damn, the level of talent and skill is unreal Also, cause I don t do steampunk and this series will probably end up making a junkie outta me.The plot reminded me a lot of another favourite I d very recently read Nadine Mutas s To Seduce a Witch s Heart A Novel of Love and Magic, what with a desperate woman releasing a man demon sorcerer from his prison, in this case Bedlam and binding him to herself to gain his cooperation and powers to aid in her search rescue whatever But that s probably where the similarities end other than me loving both book MCs Where Nadine s book was intense but light, airy, snarky and downright hilarious, Shadowbound was a lotserious with dire circumstances but each book oddly fit.Even though I prefer a snarky, hilarious plot, I could honestly appreciate the depth to this book It dealt with a lot of real world perspectives and problems and I loved how each was combated, it wasn t ridiculed and made light of Everything had a place and importance and treated and resolved in ways that made me wishpeople would read so they might learn something It s not only text books that teach you, these books termed as a waste of time are very important in understanding the people around you So many things and hurts wouldn t happen if people would just read.So kudos to Bec for a job well done and for forcing me into writing a review when I m still in a funk but just can t help myself I really enjoyed this especially because of Cleo and Sebastian s POV our book three MCs At one point I actually had to check the cover again to make sure I hadn t accidentally opened the other book xD If it hasn t been obvious till this point Are you dense I can t wait for book three xD p 3.5 stars

Rating DNFI didn t finish this one but I will say that it is farabout the sex and romance than the plot And the plot is interesting enough, as are all the secondary characters, but I just couldn t get invested in this Perhaps McMaster is just not for me Plus, it s so hard to care for characters when they have their own backstories with each other and are ripping each others clothes off all the time I m all about the sexual tension and slow burn and character development andthis boo Rating DNFI didn t finish this one but I will say that it is farabout the sex and romance than the plot And the plot is interesting enough, as are all the secondary characters, but I just couldn t get invested in this Perhaps McMaster is just not for me Plus, it s so hard to care for characters when they have their own backstories with each other and are ripping each others clothes off all the time I m all about the sexual tension and slow burn and character development andthis book isn t that Not bad, but just not for me

I love a tortured hero and Lucian definitely fit the bill Ianthe was sharp and expedient and I liked how Lucien brought out her softer edges And the romance was so sexy Lucien had a mouth on him that could rev some engines for sure Along with some wicked smart world building, there s a great supporting cast of characters and a very entertaining storyline to kick off a strong start to the Dark Arts series
