45 StarsI love Dorothy Evelyn Smith she's such an amazing author I love the way she dives into the human psyche and creates real breathing characters They're never all good or all bad they're just realProud Citadel refers to the main character Jess and how she determines at a young age to let no one into her deepest affections her tower She reasons that if she never loves anyone or anything  too strongly she'll never get hurt too badlyOf course that's easier said than doneAt the start of the novel Jess is eleven and on her way north to a relation's home in Yorkshire after burying her mother On the train she meets three boys who will play a large role in her life as the years go byThere's Sam red haired jolly Sam Willie whiney wet sock Willie and Randy devil may care poaching laughing RandyShe will be pursued by one love another and yet marry the third Although some situations disappoint I don't think there's a character in here that the reader doesn't care about so it's never dullI don't want to say any but it's a satisfying read one I would classify with her novel My Lamp is Bright Both cover many years in the main character's lifeCONTENTThe only reason I give this 45 Stars instead of 5 is because one character gazes into a crystal ball and I don't like that This happens I think once or twice before the ball is destroyed Which I was glad aboutViolence a brief moment in which an animal sadly dies by the hand of its owner

The story opens with newly orphaned Jess heading to Sunday Halt to her Mother's half sister Mary She has vowed not to love anyone as they only leave in the end and turns herself into the proud citadal of the title On the train she comes across three boys who over the next twenty odd years will feature prominently in her life but will any of them be able to break through the barriers she has put up? The author breathes life into the Yorkshire moors which almost becomes a character in itself and the characters are three dimensional with all their flaws It would be good to see this authors books back in print I'd like to read of hers
