This was actually my second time through all three of these Having just picked up The Prince Lestat I realized it has been a very loooong time since I read much of Rice's stuff and I'd forgotten a number of salient points So I began backtracking That led me to Vampire Chronicles #7 Merrick Merrick was a Mayfair Not from the main branch of the family but as we learned with Mayfairs that is seldom reason to assume ANY Mayfair lacks giftsI uickly realized how interconnected all of her Vampire Chronicles and the Mayfair Witches stories are So back I went to reread all of the Mayfair Witches seriesI'm glad I did I picked up on much that I'd missed the first time around with both The Witching Hour and Lasher I'm about halfway through Lasher now If you haven't read these in the past decade or and you liked them the first time around you might wish to revisit them As with all gifted authors and great stories what you take away from a story changes perspective at different points in your life I'm now in my mid fifties and I find myself empathizing and paying attention to the older characters As a result I'm taking away an entirely different perspectiveThis is every bit as much a grand Southern Gothic novel as much as a Gothic Horror novel I missed that the first time around when I was in my early 30s I find myself seeing the broader canvas upon which the actions of the players are painted not simply zooming ahead with the actions of the key participantsIt's not a set of novels I would have expected to stand the test of time but they hold up remarkably well I find myself pleasantly surprised and thrilled to be wrong

I have mixed feelings about this series as a whole The first book was very solid especially with the file the Talamasca had on the Mayfairs it made for a well rounded story and remains one of my favorite of Anne Rice's novels The ending absolutely leaves one in suspense and eager to read the next book to see what happensUnfortunately Lasher turns out to be a huge rape feat He ties up Rowan and rapes her repeatedly desperate to start a new race of Taltos heedless of the effect that this has on her health Aside from learning about the Mayfair Witches and Lasher through backstory narratives this book didn't add much to the world of the Mayfair WitchesTaltos was a little better and we learn some substantial information about the Taltos but the first book in this series remains the strongest one The whole series could have been so much better had Ms Rice went into different directions with several of the plot points of LasherTaltos

I should include a caveat that I only listened to the abridged audiobook set of these books not realizing that the only Audible audiobooks for the series were abridgedThat caveat aside definitely not my thing I love fantasy and mystery and magic and even the occassional lascivious or libidinous description of a romantic encounter But this book went too far got too weird and was too unsettling and not in a wow I'm really getting lost in this dark and mysterious world and am experiencing disturbing emotions kind of way which can actually be the hallmark of really great writing to me of an ick what am I reading and what is going on and who are all those people and just ick kind of way

I don't think anyone in good conscience can really recommend Anne Rice to someone elseshe's someone you have to hunt out and read because you want toI first read this in high schooland remember why I didn't finish Lasher the 2nd book This book is twisted I will say it makes you appreciate the normalcy of your family

I have tried to enjoy Anne Rice but the stories are long and boring Nowhere on this audiobook did it say abridged I don’t normally read abridged works But normally abridge works cut out the unnecessary boring bits If that is true id’ of never of made it thought the full text This was drawn out difficult to follow The history of a family is not interesting It might be what I would write for myself to as backstory for a character but never would I publish it I can’t image what agent read this and said yes this the next great published work It really is just a snore fest I only finished it so I could count it towards my reading goal So many people recommend her for dark tails including her vampire stories but they do nothing for me as a reader They are slow and lack any action to drive the story forward They almost read as if following a person on a day to day life and that is boring Hit the exciting bits and maybe a little less breast milk fetishes

This book is so pompous it's rediculous Rice gets in the way of herself all throughout this book She's so busy weaving this family tree that she bores me This is the second time I've tried to read this book and just didn't give enough of a damn to trudge through it Got over half way this time
