other morbid Tales by Carmilla VoiezIf you are looking for a good bedtime horror tale or some unusual intense horror then these horror shorts may be to your taste Features physiological, paranormal and violent tales Basement Beauty When a serial killer is terrorising the area morbid imaginings occur at every shadow whenever she walks the street at night Amalthea s friend tells her that she is Too beautiful to die She meets Daniel a strikingly calm and charming poet who she instantly bonds with intellectually but as one may guess, he has an agenda and it is fartwisted than Amalthea could ever imagine. Our protagonist falls through a figurative rabbit hole leading to the exposure of Daniel s horrific secret kept within his basement This monster of a man is revealed to be less than human and yet thewe look into his mind we see sparks of humanity within the monster reminiscent of horror classic Carmilla by Le Fanu mixed in with hints of Bluebeard or indeed its remake The Bloody Chamber Whatever twinge of empathy we may have for the antagonist, it is still no excuse for putting his own selfish needs above the torment and darkness he inflicted Many monsters do not see themselves as true monsters but victims of their own circumstances It is an intriguing insight into both monsters of horror and into the mind of a serial killer.I like how the tables are turned by the end of the story We meet Moria, whose journey through adversity to reclaiming her strength is inspiring and her regaining her power over such an ordeal is an overall good message. The conclusion was most pleasing and liked how something beautiful arose from that place of horrors There is even room for a continuation of this tale and would love to see Amalthea s tale get a much deserved sequel for the story beyond this one seems as equally fascinating The Salon of Lost Souls Laura is grateful for her new job, but the new employment may not be worth the danger it entails The story builds with steady intensity with descriptive text that brings the place to life It gave a strong sense of reality within this ghostly tale We follow Laura uncover the perils not written in the job ad.A spooky short a strong little horror short to read under the bed covers at night Impatient for Death, a Love Story The author gave a trigger warning at the start for sensitive suicide themes so caution with care if you are easily startled by darker suicidal themes.Chloe was not just figuratively in love with death, but she was in the literal sense too Her life like many was cruelly plagued by death and when her mother was taken away, Chloe gazed upon the very face of death an androgynous perfection of beauty, the personification of Death Her fascination with the entity causes her to make the deadly decision of ending her life For her it is a romantic act the chance to meet her lover and be with him forever, but life is something she underestimates and by Death showing her glimpses of the deaths of others, she is not quite so quick to have it end quite so soon, but death is what they are and their own desires cannot change when Chole s time will come So when her wish does come true, it is ultimately something she inevitable regrets The true nature of Death is greater than her romantic ideal of him he is beyond time, beyond love and cruelty and her seeing other sides of them, shatters her belle morte ideal.I liked this surreal short tale from its morbid fantasy to its ripping apart of idealistic love Jagged Jaws TW Spiked drink and themes of sexual assault.Pam s life had not moved forward since that awful day when she suffered the humiliation of sexual assault The events that lead to it was her being publicly called a slut by someone she thought cared about her Words have power and that one word ruined her life As the despicable S word spread, a disgusting individual took it upon himself to drug and violate her He considered her public property because of that mark of shame unjustly placed upon her Pam remained traumatised and silent after the event, going from job to job and not holding down a relationship longer than a week The s word haunted and debilitated her existence and every moment of her life had ever since, been just going through the motions. She crosses paths with the two that caused her that half life Stuart the ex who publicly called her a slut to all his pals and his friend Daryl, who used the slut shaming as his own excuse for the rape of Pam She using the opportunity to punish both the people who wronged her the most.It has to be said that Amanda Daryl s wife is a victim in this too highly unlikely that she knew about what happened to Pam The pregnant Amanda not only has to deal with the fallout whilst pregnant with that monster Daryl s baby but was left as the fall guy after the events that followed by the end I feel empathy for both these women, for neither deserved what happened Whatever happens by the end, an innocent woman will face a cage of some kind whether it be a physical one or a one crafted by the cruelty of two men upon a broken psyche Power was gained which was wonderful, satisfying but no one really won long term But those small victories were glorious if at a terrible cost to Pam, Amanda and her innocent baby. There is a strong message here at the way society treats rape victims and the pain it inflicts It does not begin and end with the rape itself, but by the actions of slut shaming, the failure of Courts to prosecute rape offenders leaving many victims of abuse silent as a consequence There are so many women and men who have been, assaulted, raped and abused at the hands of another If justice was handled better by the law then maybe it wouldn t happen so often in our society Broken Mirror TW Self mutilation and body dysphoria. This tale deals with the delicate subject of gender identity This is a short but hard hitting tale of what it must be like to be stuck in a body that is not yours it would be a horror story This story is striking, alarming and has no happily ever after I wished the protagonist could have the body they deserved, for society to see her as she is inside and not by her male appendage cruelly given by a fault in mother nature It leads to the mental breakdown of the story s protagonist when referred to by a male name The events that follow are heartbreaking and horrific. It is an original horror premise, but it is not easy reading for those of a delicate nature I personally found it a striking and unique tale The Changeling TW Self harm.Miranda is a newbie to the Goth scene and meets a girl online called Evelyn Evelyn invites her to a Goth club and Miranda happily accepts The gothic beauty seems to distort before Everlyns eyes either by the green liquid she imbibed, by her unstable mind, or by somethingunearthly Evyln disappears much to Miranda s distress, so she spends weeks visiting the club, becoming a regular on the Goth scene, and changing her look One day another newbie asks about Evelyn and Miranda says that she is Evelyn.Has Evelyn invaded Miranda s body like a symbiont, was Evelyn just a facet of Miranda all along and was just hallucinating their entire interactions, or was Evelyn a mythical being who helped Miranda become somethingIt is a fascinating tale whether you analyse it psychologically or as a paranormal piece You could also interpret it as a mix of the paranormal and the psychological her fragile mind left her open to something altering her and part of Evelyn may have become part of her, whilst Miranda s Evelyn will help transform another into something other than they were before Did Miranda psychological break or was it somethingPenetrationTW Sexual assault and catcalling. Our protagonist is Lilith a beautiful woman traveling across the streets at night She finds herself being targeted by a vile individual with only depraved thoughts on his mind The creep begins by catcalling calling her the most horrid and demeaning of names for absolutely no reason but for own his perverted pleasure He continues to demean Lilith by pawing at her and treating her as an object for his gratification It s horrid and disturbing to see someone at the mercy of someone s power, but don t fear dear reader for Lilith is no ordinary woman she is much muchThe tables are quickly turned between them and had her and her attacking What follows is someone does get penetrated but it is him who receives the penetration of the sharp metallic variety. This is adapted from chapter two of Camilla Voiez novel Starblood , which I cannot recommend highly enough If you like paranormal tales with horror, sex, blood and strong women then this is the book for you In conclusion, this book and ultimately each story analyses both our nightmares primal fears, and makes them vividly real This is horror in its truest sense by taking elements of the horrors of reality and mixing it up with nightmarish paranormal horror.Incredibly well told horror shorts to keep you awake at night

Here s the thing about horror, it s either beautiful in the way it makes that chill run, like the way Silent Hill manages no matter how many times you experience it Or itsits cheesy, let s say a Leprechaun level of B rating.Broken Mirror is definitely no Leprechaun well, ok, fine one Leprechaun, but don t worry there are plentystories than that one in this collection You might even find yourself reading a story which such Poe like romantic irony you have to re read that particular Here s the thing about horror, it s either beautiful in the way it makes that chill run, like the way Silent Hill manages no matter how many times you experience it Or itsits cheesy, let s say a Leprechaun level of B rating.Broken Mirror is definitely no Leprechaun well, ok, fine one Leprechaun, but don t worry there are plentystories than that one in this collection You might even find yourself reading a story which such Poe like romantic irony you have to re read that particular one twice It was by far my favorite, very poetic, very sweetly written For that story alone Impatient for Death the entire book is worth a read. For those if you that need , the entire collection covers a wide array of fears, pain, emotion Each character takes you on an instance One single moment in their existence You are just lucky enough to get them at their worst That is probably the best part You don t know the beginning, or the end, all you get to see is this snapshot No background, no foreshadowing, no development to this very instance, no clue as to what happens after the dust has settled I love the snapshot story telling this collection gives you

During the 80s and 90s I lived on a solid diet of horror fiction and somehow I drifted away from the genre Broken Mirror reminded me of all love about it.Comprising 13 morbid tales the subject matter is both challenging and frightening Carmilla Voiez is not afraid to explore some dark places In Broken Mirror you will find stories covering suicide, self harm, imprisonment and sexual violence I am not afraid to say that some of the stories were quite disturbing and very powerful because of it During the 80s and 90s I lived on a solid diet of horror fiction and somehow I drifted away from the genre Broken Mirror reminded me of all love about it.Comprising 13 morbid tales the subject matter is both challenging and frightening Carmilla Voiez is not afraid to explore some dark places In Broken Mirror you will find stories covering suicide, self harm, imprisonment and sexual violence I am not afraid to say that some of the stories were quite disturbing and very powerful because of it I think that the measure of good horror is how long you continue to think about it after you put the book down I found my mind drifting back to the various tales at all times of the day, they got under my skin and haunted me long after I powered down my kindle At the end of a story, you emerge bloodied, battered and genuinely grateful to have survived It s what horror should be like raw, frightening and thought provoking. All the stories are well written, the places feel real, the characters are well developed and you genuinely care about them There is a consistent voice throughout so while the stories are very different to each other you can sense the hand of the author guiding you through each tale It is this consistent story telling that makes this book such an enjoyable and addictive read. One thing that struck is how the author develops her characters to be likeable in such a short space of time, even those who act in aantagonistic role are well rounded and in some cases you cannot help but feel some empathy with them I found myself genuinely attached to many of the characters Tay in particular was one my favourite characters in a book crammed full complex, interesting people I would love to see a follow up to Basement Beauty as I really felt attached to the characters and their struggles I m not being specific, because I don t want to spoil it.The settings and locations are all well set up, Lillith s walk through the city in Penetration was so well drawn it sent shivers down my spine The scene was so well described it not only provided a mental picture of urban decay it set the mood and tone of the story.I genuinely forgot how good short stories can be and all of the tales in Broken Mirror are great, naturally I have my favourites My stand outs were the aforementioned Penetration, Basement Beauty, Cracked and Salon of Lost Souls everyone will have their own.So my view I enjoyed this collection of stories, they are well written, wonderfully described, populated by rounded characters and most importantly, they are terrifying I will definitely readof Carmilla Voiez s work, just as soon as I come out from behind the sofa
