The Dead of Night by Jean Rabe has two stellar things going for it well developed characters that I will be visiting again and multiple mysteries that Sheriff Blackwell and her small department must solve This is a community that you can tell the police department feels protective of even if some of them are considered to be a conspiracy theorist or a few fries short in their Happy MealThe Dead of Night picks up right after the first book in the Piper Blackwell Mysteries The Dead of Winter Rabe gives us enough background information about what happened in the first book that the reader isn’t lost Sheriff Blackwell caught a serial killer in the first book while running for sheriff and being a 23 year old just out of the military I don’t often go back to previous books in a series if I start it on a later book but I am so intrigued by the premise of the first book and enjoyed the main cast of characters so much that I do want to go back and read The Dead of WinterWhile one of the two main mysteries was pretty easy for me to figure out what was going on early in the book the second one had me guessing until the end The way Rabe interweaved the two mysteries and how the cops were going about solving them was very well done I enjoyed the dynamic between the Sheriff and her Chief Deputy and am interested to see how the Chief Deputy’s granddaughter fits into upcoming booksIf you are looking for a series with well developed characters and a mystery with lots of suspects you’ll want to check out the Piper Blackwell Mysteries

One of the most difficult things an author ever does is try and bring his or her second volume in a series up to the level of the first Jean Rabe has done just that in her encore appearance of Piper Blackwell 23 year old sheriff of a tiny town in the upper Midwest The author's deep acuaintance with such small towns is evident and her studies of police procedure make what happens in the department believable Her characters are well drawn; some of them such as the woman who serves as switchboard on the second shift are uirky and fun Tensions in the town rise when proof of a serial killer is discovered Tensions are also rising in the police department between the newbie female sheriff who was elected because of her father's long tenure in the position and the older male detectives I loved the pacing Jean takes her readers through the stumbles of finding the correct clues then races to the end Fast read enjoyable Jean where is the next Piper book?

Now in her sheriff role for 4 months Piper is called out in The Dead of NIght to meet Mark 'the Shark' Thresher a nonagenarian who is convinced his money is being stolen online Piper agrees to investigate but on the way back to her car she trips in the dark over some bones A nine year old skeleton buried for over half a centuryMeanwhile Piper's department is being shaken up with the departure of one of the team and a set of interviews is reuired But her father the former sheriff is now cancer free and wants to return to police work Plus Piper's relationship with Nang is developing so both her personal and professional life are rapidly changingThe plot differs greatly against the gore of the first book The Dead of Winter The use of online hacking is very up to date and contrasts wonderfully with the cold case and traditional investigating reuired to find the identity of the boy and his murderer The two main cases are bolstered by DUIs and a mailbox destroyer which adds plenty of drama and action to the novelThe gentler plotline allows greater development of the characters and their relationships Oren her chief deputy is respectful of his young boss now and Piper is working hard to include him and welcome his opinions Mark the Shark is a great character but I won't include any spoilers about his character arc There is an undercurrent of emotion in this book that was unexpected but very enjoyable which I think is a credit to the author's skill at making us care about the characters and their livesI liked this book just as much as the first as the characters are so engaging and human The Dead of NIght secures Piper as a credible and likable leader and detective strong yet vulnerable I am looking forward to the next book in the series

Piper Blackwell is dealing with multiple crimes once again After a serial killer is dumped in her lap on her first day as Spencer Co Indiana sheriff she now stumbles on literally half buried human bones that may be over 65 years old A late night meeting with an elderly veteran Mark the Shark who insists Piper investigate who is stealing his life savings leads to the grisly discoveryLike that isn’t enough Gretchen another senior citizen is terrorizing mail boxes all over the county She is described as “missing all the fries out of her Happy Meal” In the middle of trying to stop the mailbox mauler discover the identity of the decades old bones and get Mark’s money back Piper starts receiving threats to stop her investigating and soon finds herself in imminent dangerOnce again Jean Rabe has written a page turning thriller Set in a small town with all the small town problems the characters capture the reader with their similarities and differences from all the real people who cross our lives Rabe has the knack to put the reader smack into every sceneWill Piper continue to serve the citizens of Spencer County or return to the Army; her career before she came home to help her dad? Will she overcome criticism because she’s still in her early twenties and lacks experience of her seasoned detectives? You’ll have to read to find outMeanwhile eagerly awaiting the next installment Highly recommendedMary Cunningham author Margaritas Mayhem Murder Andi Anna Jones Mystery #1

Mark the Shark is a 90 years old veteran he is and thinks that he is being followed He calls Sheriff Piper Blackwell to stop whoever is after him At the same time recent storms have exposed a skeleton on the bluffs Clearly someone was killed but who were they and why were they killed? Piper and Oran Rosenberg step up to figure out what is going on But someone wants the past to stay buried and will go to al lengths to keep it so Piper has recently been elected as sheriff and is in the middle of rearranging her staff when Mark calls about being robbed She is hoping that is all that is happening when she gets the news of the bodying being discovered From here it is a break neck pace as secrets are uncovered and someone tries to keep them hidden at any costThis is a great story that will suck you in keep you guessing with all the twist and turns and will leave you shocked at the end I have not read the first book in this series The Dead of Winter but I had no problem following along with the story But after reading The Dead of Night I can’t wait to go back and see that I missedI received The Dead of Night from Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours for free This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book

I'm not normally a cozy reader but I love the Piper Blackwell series It's a bit darker than most cozies and instead of the cookie cutter format we find the unexpectedRabe's storytelling keeps you locked in the book Though I don't really care for the main character the rest of the town is full of old friends In this book we meet Mark the Shark who is probably in my top ten characters ever created Ms Rabe if you're reading this please send me a picture of Mark for Christmas I'll gladly hang it on my library wallsIf you enjoy mysteries or thrillers at all I strongly urge you to pick up both books in the series Though this one stands alone it's a small town with many of the same characters and that background really cements your relationships here

An excellent seuel; I enjoyed it The only problem I have with these books is the writing style I'm not sure what it's called but having the characters speak in short abbreviated sentences bothers me Perhaps having one character do so would be OK but most of them do it and I find it annoyingOther than that very well written
