Megan Chance has done it again A Splendid Ruin is an astonishing beautiful richly imagined historical novel about class betrayal revenge and the terrible choices a woman must sometimes make to survive in dangerous times This is a spellbinding page turner of a book full of unexpected twists and turns told in beautiful prose and set against the devastating backdrop of the Great San Francisco earthuake In it Megan Chance gives us a profoundly intimate look at a city and a woman in ruins

35 stars 1 is too harsh 5 is gushingThis won't be everyone's cup of tea Those bothered by the prose I don't know It made sense to me The main character was raised by her mother to take her place in society; the first person POV and being set in 1904 1906 also lends to the big words being reasonable I found the plot creative; Miss May was a little too naive and trusting given how I think her mother would have prepared her Often the descriptive narration was a pleasure; other times a bit muchIt is a light read which I liked I've known people of similar natures to the cast of characters relatableHaving not read any other works by this author I don't know how all this compares I liked it well enough to look for other titles to read in the futureI didn't give 4 stars as something seems lacking and I haven't figured out What yet I save 5 stars for exceptional products excellence is hard to come by

Much gritty than I expected and of the everything will be all right variety but this story read wonderfully to me From the poverty of May's early life to the boredom of the 'sporting set' and the optimism of what remains unwritten Chance has presented a believable and heartening story Can't you smell the asylum Can't you hear the earthuake I canWhile it may be nice that I'd wish was made of the you can't because you're a woman and the fact that San Francisco was one of the first places that mantra disappeared that wasn't the purpose of the story May was the purpose of the story and one leaves the book with a belief that she will prevail That's enough for me

A great read from a very talented authorVery moving captivating tale by a new to me author who can really flesh out and describe a truly harrowing tale about money social status barriers and the lengths that people will go to to climb them If you're looking for a book that satisfies on many levels you'll love this book It has plot character descriptions of wealth poverty natural disasters and the lengths that people will go to in these situations The descriptions about the inner workings of a turn of the 20th century insane asylum almost had me over the edge but we're so well written

Megan has outdone herself with this book It was my first but it won't be my lastWhat an amazing story on so many levels I was hanging on every word Nothing was predictable; everything was fascinating The story was woven into the San Francisco earthuake and subseuent fire which actually became a part of the storyI never felt sorry for May If anything I admired her ability to survive Characters were well written and believable even the nasty ones Great story Highly recommend

LovelyOnce again historical fiction captures my attention and my heart Set in the first few years of the 1900s and ending shortly after the San Francisco earthuake and fire this is an era I haven't read a lot of about This author's detailed scenery and attention to societal norms of the day changed that A truly enjoyable read
