What a beautiful spiritual book that is to be read over and over again When the last bear s skin has been takenand the last ram s head has been mountedand fitted with glass eyes,We may find in them the reflectionof today s memories.Take care, or soon our ears will strainin vain to hear the creator s song One thing to remember is to talk to the animals If you do, they will talk back to you But if you don t talk to the animals, they won t talk back to you, then you won t understand, and w What a beautiful spiritual book that is to be read over and over again When the last bear s skin has been takenand the last ram s head has been mountedand fitted with glass eyes,We may find in them the reflectionof today s memories.Take care, or soon our ears will strainin vain to hear the creator s song One thing to remember is to talk to the animals If you do, they will talk back to you But if you don t talk to the animals, they won t talk back to you, then you won t understand, and when you don t understand you will fear, and when you fear you will destroy the animals, and if you destroy the animals, you will destroy yourself My people s memoryreaches into the beginning of all things Of all the teachings we receivethis one is the most important Nothing belongs to youof what there is,of what you take, you must share

Is this poetry I find it hard to tell Whatever it may be, I found parts of it to be rather beautiful, but most of it to be a nostalgic longing for the past This book wasn t written for me, that much I can tell There is a lot of history in its subtext that I am absolutely ignorant of So really, all I could do was read, think on George s words, and accept his pain and hope I don t understand it, but I will listen to it The illustrations by Helmut Hirnschall are quite beautiful Though rough Is this poetry I find it hard to tell Whatever it may be, I found parts of it to be rather beautiful, but most of it to be a nostalgic longing for the past This book wasn t written for me, that much I can tell There is a lot of history in its subtext that I am absolutely ignorant of So really, all I could do was read, think on George s words, and accept his pain and hope I don t understand it, but I will listen to it The illustrations by Helmut Hirnschall are quite beautiful Though rough, they manage to capture a spirit in the subjects Most of the images I could visualize in my mind people, places, and animals of another time became a littlereal to me It was an interesting experience One that made me realize my lack of knowledge when it comes to the history, culture, and issues of the first nations people of Canada I m glad I found this one

This is a short book and will take about 30 minutes to read but it is powerful Chief Dan George reminisces about his native past and in doing so teaches powerful lessons about life and living to whomever reads it He speaks about what it means to live within oneself and with nature It s tough to find, but if you do get it You won t regret it and you ll keep it close to read it over and over.
