Reminds me of Spillane at his best yes it s that good , Michael Lion has crafted a superbly executed PI novel without the PI The protagonist, Bird, is a snitch or nark, informant whatever takes your fancy whose sole purpose for existing is to dig up dirt on the underworld figures who lurk in the dark recesses of LA and get paid for it be it by cops or mob figures money is money to Bird I wont detail the plot you get that from the blurb, but will say that the predominantly night time Reminds me of Spillane at his best yes it s that good , Michael Lion has crafted a superbly executed PI novel without the PI The protagonist, Bird, is a snitch or nark, informant whatever takes your fancy whose sole purpose for existing is to dig up dirt on the underworld figures who lurk in the dark recesses of LA and get paid for it be it by cops or mob figures money is money to Bird I wont detail the plot you get that from the blurb, but will say that the predominantly night time setting complements the overall dark tone of the novel nicely Lion has a great talent for merging seemingly unlinked events and an ability to leave the reader shocked surprised addicted at novels end Impressive

If you like Chandler, chances are you ll like Mike Lion s debut novel Certain passages of The Butcher s Granddaughter ring classic noir style The air was that greasy cool you only feel at night in the city, and the last of the vampires were peeling themselves off the streets as I flashed past the numbers blocks along Olympic Boulevard It was four thirty in the blessed a.m Complete with a hard boiled protagonist, femme driven fatalism, and complex plot shifts, Lion takes the classic noir If you like Chandler, chances are you ll like Mike Lion s debut novel Certain passages of The Butcher s Granddaughter ring classic noir style The air was that greasy cool you only feel at night in the city, and the last of the vampires were peeling themselves off the streets as I flashed past the numbers blocks along Olympic Boulevard It was four thirty in the blessed a.m Complete with a hard boiled protagonist, femme driven fatalism, and complex plot shifts, Lion takes the classic noir voice and sets it firmly in modern L.A Not an easy feat I look forward to his next novel

This book was written by a childhood friends so it was a compulsory read of a genre that I don t typically read murder mystery Add to that the underbelly element of the characters and the setting Los Angeles, 1994 and you ve got some gritty reading. It s a quick, easy read, and a great first novel that begs for a second to follow the dangers thrown into the life of the anti hero Bird.
